Welcome New Summer Intern
By Joana Tavares
Please join me in welcoming Jen Mendez, our new Environmental Communications Intern!
Jen has a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from The University of Hawai’i at Hilo (UH Hilo). There, she volunteered with youth education, assisting in various environmental education programs for local elementary, middle, and high school students and was responsible for creating different activities to teach students about local sustainability practices. After graduating from UH Hilo, Jen interned for Smart Planet Technologies, a materials engineering company that specializes in sustainable material advancements. She worked directly under the Vice President conducting educational outreach through the use of different social media platforms and newsletters. Her responsibilities at Smart Planet Technologies also included speaking at trade-shows both locally and globally educating the public about misconceptions and solutions in the recycling industry. We were very impressed by Jen’s strong application and by the amount preparedness, poise, and insight she demonstrated during her interview.
This coming fall, Jen plans to continue her education at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), where she will be pursing a Master’s degree in Conservation and Restoration Science. In the future, Jen hopes to find a career in endangered species and natural resource management overseeing institution’s conservation activities, providing leadership and coordination of natural resource management projects that focus on the recovery of endangered species and the protection of critical habitats.
We feel very fortunate to have found Jen (or did she find us?). Jen will be creating content for, and managing our social media accounts to help us attract new members, keep existing volunteers engaged, and to increase our online presence as a means to support our mission and our community during these challenging times. In addition, Jen will be working with us to support our ongoing projects (i.e. Thursday webinars, Summer Institute for Educators, Virtual Expeditions) and to promote the projects we are hoping to launch in the fall. Email Jen at email@example.com.
